IBS Smart is an advanced test for confirming if you have post-infectious IBS. Post-infectious IBS develops after a previous bout of food poisoning or gut infection. It causes two specific antibodies (anti-CdtB and anti-vinculin) in the gut, which the IBS Smart test detects. It’s suitable for assessing diarrhea or mixed-type symptoms of IBS associated with food poisoning or gastroenteritis. The test uses an at-home collection kit, and can avoid more invasive procedures such as a colonoscopy, if the test has a positive result.

The TrioSmart breath test is a first-of-its-kind breath test assessing the levels of hydrogen, methane, and hydrogen sulphide in the gut, as excessive levels of these can suggest an overgrowth of bacteria. An overgrowth of gut bacteria can cause SIBO, IBS, bloating, dietary sensitivities, and more. It involves taking a breath test (breathing into a sample bag) as a baseline, then drinking some glucose, then providing breath tests every 30 minutes until all sample bags are used.
Why take the glucose version?
Glucose has fewer false positives than the lactulose version, and can give more specific results as to where the overgrowth of bacteria is. It does, however, get absorbed by the intestine faster and therefore gives false negative results further into the test. People often take this test if they got positive results with the lactulose version, but want a more specific reading of where in the intestines the overgrowth of bacteria is.

Lactulose isn’t absorbed by the intestines (unlike glucose) so continues to give results throughout the intestines. It does, however, have a higher risk of false positives than the glucose version, and requires a prescription in Austria, the United States, and the Phillippines. People often take this version of the test first, and then take the glucose version if they want further confirmation or more specific results.
