Gangliosides are actually glycosphingolipids and can be found widely in the body. Antibodies to gangliosides can be found in many neurological conditions especially Guillain-Barré Syndrome and Miller Fisher Syndrome as gangliosides are abundant in the brain and central nervous system. Whilst gangliosides are utilised by the body as part of the cellular immune system some pathogens exploit them as receptors e.g. Salmonella and Campylobacter. Antibodies to myelin are strongly associated with the neurological condition Multiple Sclerosis. Those with positive antibodies are thought to be more prone to relapses.
